Have any of you heard of the CPSIA or HANDMADE TOY ALLIANCE.
Well, there was a law passed requiring all products geared towards a child under the age of 12, be tested for lead or other harmful chemical substances. Sounds great right? I don't want my children to be exposed to any such materials. That is why so many parents stopped purchasing items made in China and began purchasing HANDMADE products such as wood toys made from your local carpenter.
This silly law requires all surfaces be tested costing the local mom and pop artist excessive amounts of money, approx, $300 - $4000 per item. I really can't get into it on this post but you can read more about it here at change.org
So, you may be thinking, I don't make/sell products, this law doesn't affect me. I won't be affected. Well, think again, do you like those children's resale shops? Are they going to be able to sell items that have not undergone testing? You won't be able to purchase handmade toys painted with non-toxic paints, handmade clothing NOT mass produced. Maybe for a few hundred dollars each, forcing us parents to purchase cheap, who-knows-where-they-were-made items!
Well, may be time to set up the jig-saw and start teaching classes on how to make your own toys, anybody?
